You shouldn’t start with the press conference here in the CSU party headquarters. You should first take a look through the window, into the garden: Monday morning, the CSU unveiled a poster for the state elections there. It was finished before CDU leader Friedrich Merz talked about the AfD in the ZDF “summer interview” on Sunday and thus caused some unrest. Franz Josef Strauss can be seen on the poster, alongside a quote from the former party leader: “We want nothing to do with right-wing extremists, fools and extremists.” In all caps, the poster measures approximately four by three feet. The poster is now also a message to Merz.
