A few days before the constituent session of the Bavarian state parliament on Monday, the state election committee confirmed the previous official final result without any changes. According to the state returning officer on Tuesday, the proportion of postal voters rose massively in the election on October 8th: while the proportion was 38.9 percent in 2018, it has now climbed to 55.1 percent. However, the share of 62.4 percent determined in the 2021 federal election under pandemic conditions in Bavaria was not reached.
As with the preliminary final result, the CSU achieved 37.0 percent – in 2018 it received 37.2 percent. They are followed by the Free Voters with 15.8 percent, who achieved the best result in their history. The AfD ended up with 14.6 percent (2018: 10.2 percent), the Greens with 14.4 percent (17.6 percent) and the SPD with 8.4 percent. For the Social Democrats it is the worst result in their history in Bavaria. With 3.0 percent, the FDP clearly missed getting back into the Maximilianeum.
In addition to the ÖDP with 1.8 percent of the valid total votes, there was also the Die Linke party with 1.5 percent, over one percent of the valid first and second votes. The other seven parties received less than one percent of the vote.
In the election for the 19th Bavarian state parliament, 73.1 percent of around 9.4 million eligible voters cast their votes – so voter turnout was 0.8 percentage points higher than in 2018. There are 203 representatives in the new state parliament. This includes eleven overhang mandates for the CSU, seven compensatory mandates go to the Free Voters, two to the AfD and three to the Greens. As in 2018, most MPs (85) are from the CSU, the Free Voters have 37 seats (2018: 27), the AfD has 32 (2018: 22), the Greens have 32 (2018: 38) and the SPD has 17 (2018: 22).
