Good news after a long wait: Production on the long-awaited “Star Trek” spin-off “Section 31” has begun in Canada.

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (61) is back in the “Star Trek” universe: As the streaming service Paramount+ announced on Wednesday, production work on the film “Star Trek: Section 31” has officially begun in Toronto, Canada. In this spin-off to the popular series “Star Trek: Discovery ” Yeoh will reprise her role as Empress Philippa Georgiou.

As such, she will join a secret branch of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and confronting the wrongdoings of the past. When it was announced, the streaming service left it unclear when “Star Trek: Section 31” would be available to watch on Paramount+.

“I am beyond thrilled to be returning to my Star Trek family and the role I have loved for so long,” Michelle Yeoh said in a statement in April 2023 when it was announced that the film would be released should come.

The 61-year-old, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress last year for the multiverse masterpiece “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” appeared in “Star Trek: Discovery” from the first episode in 2017. The successful series re-established the “Star Trek” series universe in the streaming age on the streaming service Paramount+ (previously CBS All Access).

According to the current announcement, “Star Trek: Section 31” – written by Craig Sweeny – will be shot under director Olatunde Osunsanmi (46). Yeoh is not only the leading actress, but also one of the producers. Other members of the cast include Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruygrok, Robert Kazinsky, Humberly Gonzalez and James Hiroyuki Liao.
