The new one comes out every week star with current bestsellers: Once a month, we present the books reviewed in the print edition to you online as well.

It is a bit surprising that so many people still buy “real” reading material despite increasing digitization. On the other hand, it is also a good sign that so many readers still appreciate a good book. This is why you will find the star– Orderers of the print editions, which are published every Thursday, are now also online. Here are the Fiction and non-fiction bestsellers from the June 2023.

“A Matter of Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus

A brilliant chemist gets pregnant in the 1960s, is fired from her lab and then becomes a star on a TV cooking show. Great novel, great film. Since nowadays 90 to 120 minutes of cinema seems much too short for almost every story (which is not true if you look at the numerous widespread series), the adaptation of Bonnie Garmus’ bestseller is now also available as an eight-part series. Brie Larson, who won the Oscar for best actress in the chamber play “Room” in 2016, has taken on the leading role of Elizabeth Zott. Starting October 13, she’ll be on Apple TV+ to prove that women don’t need weird colorful suits to be superheroes. Here is the book.

“If everyone likes you, nobody takes you seriously” by Martin Wehrle

Finally be quick-witted, never put your own needs aside again, no longer allow yourself to be taken advantage of – and only read a book for that: That is the promise that Martin Wehrle makes with this bestseller. His recommendation: “Say what you think. Get what you deserve.” We recommend the practical test: simply go through the world with merciless honesty, tell the boss, your husband or your annoying neighbor the truth for a day. But please don’t complain to us if the new sincerity causes trouble. Here is the book.

“King of Battle and Blood” by Scarlett St Clair

Strange how women in novels keep falling for these vampire dudes. Let’s take a look at one such example: clothes from the last century, unhealthy complexion, strange teeth that don’t exactly invite to kissing because of the risk of injury. Nevertheless, the fascination with the dreadful youths hasn’t stopped since “Twilight”. Author Scarlett St. Clair also wants a piece of the cake and has dreamed up a princess who will marry and eventually kill a vampire king to save her own kingdom. Well, if it wasn’t for love. Then King Adrian Aleksandr Vasiliev smiles (probably) just cheekily peeks out a tooth, and then it’s over for Isolde von Lara. Here is the book.

“One farm and eleven siblings” by Ewald Frie

The secret star of the 2023 Non-Fiction Prize was not just the winner Frie, but “Wolke 2”, the first winning cow from his father’s herd. In 1950, father and cow took the train (!) to Frankfurt am Main, where the red and white beauty won the DLG show. That’s what Frie said in his acceptance speech. In his book, the historian uses his own life story and the memories of his siblings to describe how agriculture and farm life in the Münsterland have changed over the decades. Applause! And a happy moo. Here is the book.

“The Yellow Elephant” by Heinz Strunk

In the last issue, Jana Felgenhauer tore this book to pieces. Kester Schlenz would like to differentiate here: Yes, the stories in Strunk’s new work are often evil, sometimes really mean. Sadness instead of a happy ending. But Strunk is the brilliant chronicler of the defective, who with his polished language and his sarcasm shifts the deficit into the grotesque and thus makes it more bearable for all of us. In addition, the narrator is often the biggest banger in his work. So Strunk once said to the star: “I’m over 60. How far am I from grandpa? The decay is visible to me and everywhere. I’m strict and possibly also relentless in literature.” Perhaps Schlenz appreciates Strunk’s work so much because he is also “an old, white sack”, as he says himself. Here is the book.

“This Side of the Wall” by Katja Hoyer

Constant Stasi surveillance, shortage economy and Dederon fug, these are common stereotypes with which the GDR is still often associated. Is there something to it. But not only. That is why historian Katja Hoyer (born in Guben in 1985) decided to look at the 40-year history of the GDR from a different perspective – from the perspective of the people from the East. For her non-fiction book, she interviewed people who fought their everyday life under socialism: teachers, factory workers, border guards. Incidentally, Hoyer himself has lived in London for years. And thus has enough distance to Germany as a whole. Here is the book.

“Breton Glory” by Jean-Luc Bannalec

No great surprise that Commissioner Dupin’s twelfth case, this time investigating a winemaker murder in the Loire, has made it to the top again. Since true fans devour all of their favorite authors, let’s not forget that Bannalec is working on a trilogy about the German Revolution of 1848-49 under his real name Jörg Bong. Part one, “The Flame of Freedom”, was released in October 2022, the sequels are coming next year and the year after. A work by the qualified literary scholar from 1993 also sounds like an entertaining holiday read: “The resolution of disharmony: On the mediation of society, nature and aesthetics in the writings of Karl Philipp Moritz”. We wish you good entertainment. Here is the book.

“1964: Eyes of the Storm” by Paul McCartney

A long time ago – and yet Beatlemania fascinates to this day. This book takes us back to the heart of fan hysteria. Back in 1964, Paul McCartney documented the band’s first performances in the USA with a small Pentax camera. Was very close to the madness that raged around him. They are usually not good photos in the technical sense, but they impress with their immediacy and intimacy. McCartney captured a piece of history with them. Here is the book.
