Srebrenica genocide: UN wants international day of remembrance – Violent Serbian protests – Politics

Superficially it is quiet in Srebrenica on this April day. Thousands of white gravestones rise sharply into the sky, individual mourners walk through the gate to the cemetery to lay flowers and kneel in prayer. But tensions are escalating around the memorial in the east of Bosnia-Herzegovina, fueled primarily by Serbian politicians. It’s about, once again, how what happened here 29 years ago can be classified politically and historically. The foreign minister of neighboring Serbia, Ivica Dačić, declared in mid-April: “We have nothing against condemning the war crimes in Bosnia and elsewhere. But we are against the Serbian people being described as genocidal.”
