“Squid Game” & Co .: South Korea’s creative miracle – culture

K-Pop, “Parasite” and, most recently, two Netflix hits: South Korea has immense creative power. What the country does better than its Asian neighbors in terms of culture – and why Germany can learn a lot from it.

Becoming a global star unexpectedly at 50 must feel strange. That happened to Hwang Dong-hyuk last year. “It’s as if I invented ‘Star Wars’ or ‘Harry Potter’,” said Hwang Dong-yhuk in the fall, explaining his emotional state. It said “Squid Game”, the Netflix series that he wrote, produced and directed, especially in most of the countries in which the streaming service can be received, number one on Netflix shows. “Squid Game” is now one of the most successful Netflix series ever. Not measured against the other, also very successful South Korean series, but worldwide, against everything that is seen and produced in around 190 countries in the Netflix world, including the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Japan and India.
