Ukraine’s power supply is repeatedly the target of Russian attacks – including last night. According to official information, numerous regions were affected. The energy minister called for people to save electricity.

According to Ukrainian sources, the Russian army has again targeted the country’s energy system. As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Platform Zelensky said they are already working on “mitigating the consequences of Russian terror.”

“On the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism, Nazi Putin launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine,” the president wrote. The whole world must understand who is who. And he called out: “The world must not give a new Nazism a chance.”

79 years ago today, World War II ended in Europe with Germany’s unconditional surrender. On May 8th, war victims are remembered in Ukraine. In Russia, Remembrance Day is celebrated on May 9th as “Victory Day” – traditionally with a large military parade in Moscow.

Energy Minister calls for saving electricity

Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko also spoke on Facebook about massive nighttime attacks. The exact extent of the damage is still being determined. “The enemy wants to deprive us of our ability to generate and transmit electricity in sufficient quantities,” the minister wrote. He called on the population to save electricity, which would be a “contribution to victory.”

The nighttime air alert in large parts of Ukraine began when Russian combat drones were approaching. Rockets were then used. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, one of them targeted Kiev. The capital’s military command later said that all incoming objects had been intercepted. In the suburb of Brovary, an unspecified civil infrastructure facility caught fire, Mayor Ihor Saposchko said. A man and a woman were injured.

Conflict parties as a source

In the current situation, information on the course of the war, shelling and casualties provided by official bodies of the Russian and Ukrainian parties to the conflict cannot be directly verified by an independent body.

Two facilities hit in Lviv

In the western Ukrainian region of Lviv, Russian projectiles hit a “critical energy infrastructure object” and a power generation plant, according to Governor Maxim Kosytskyj. A fire broke out at the facility.

In its war of aggression, which has been going on for more than two years, Russia has been shelling targets in Ukraine almost every night – even far from the front. The Russian army repeatedly tries not only to hit military targets, but also to shut down Ukraine’s energy system. Even purely civilian targets are repeatedly hit.

Russia reports attack on oil facility in Luhansk

According to Russian authorities, there were also Ukrainian attacks on the Russian-occupied Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine during the night. As the Russian governor of the region, Leonid Pasechnik, wrote on Telegram, at least five employees were injured in a rocket attack on an oil facility. In addition, power lines were damaged, which led to a partial power outage around the facility.
