Berlin is checking whether similar objects have already been sighted in German airspace. Tensions between the US and China are growing.

After the shooting down of a suspected spy balloon by US fighter jets and the appearance of a second balloon over Colombia, the federal government is also alarmed. “The federal government takes Chinese espionage and the current reports very seriously and is coordinating with its most important partners,” it said when asked Süddeutsche Zeitung on Sunday from security circles. When asked whether such objects had already been spotted over German territory, it said: “The responsible authorities are working to clarify the facts. Based on the knowledge available so far, assessments for Germany would be premature.”
