A Grimme Prize stands for top quality on television or the Internet. The renowned TV awards were awarded in the Marl City Theater on Friday – with the first appearance of the new interim boss.
The award ceremony for the coveted Grimme Awards for particularly successful television programs began in the Marl City Theater in the evening. The new interim head of the Grimme Institute also came to the gala, Peter Wenzel, whose appointment had only been announced the day before. After ten years at the helm of the institute, her departing predecessor, Frauke Gerlach, did not take part for health reasons. Wenzel is head of the social affairs department in nearby Datteln and takes on the office on an interim and voluntary basis.
A total of 17 productions were to receive the unduly but highly prestigious award over the course of the evening. One of the award-winning programs is “Ukraine – War Diary of a Pediatrician” (Arte). A prize was also awarded to Sarah Bosetti’s show “Bosetti Late Night” (ZDF/3sat) and the production of the streaming provider Disney+ “Sam – Ein Sachse” about an Afro-German police officer in Saxony. The series is based on a real case. Lead actor Malick Bauer and the actual former Saxon police officer Samuel Meffire posed together on the red carpet in Marl.
The Grimme Institute is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the prize this year and is experiencing considerable financial difficulties. A six-figure financial hole for the current year could only be closed by foregoing employees’ salaries. The company’s second major competition, the Grimme Online Award for quality productions on the Internet, is in danger of being canceled this year due to a lack of money. From a purely budgetary perspective, the online award is currently not possible this year, said Grimme interim boss Wenzel to the dpa. But he will still look for new possibilities and opportunities.
