The IOC has accepted eight new members, including the German Michael Mronz. An Oscar winner is now also in the ring circle.

Sports manager Michael Mronz has joined the International Olympic Committee. The 56-year-old was elected as a new IOC member at the General Assembly in Mumbai with a large majority of 64:9.

The Cologne native is now the third German in the elite circle of the umbrella organization, alongside IOC President Thomas Bach and athlete representative Britta Heidemann. Mronz spoke of “a great honor” after his election.

In addition to Mronz, seven other new IOC members were accepted. The most dazzling new addition to the 107-strong Ringe circle is actress Michelle Yeoh (61) from Malaysia, who was awarded the Oscar this year as best actress in the film “Everything Everywhere All at Once”.

DOSB congratulates Mronz

The German Olympic Sports Confederation immediately sent its congratulations to Mronz. “The IOC session made an excellent choice today and appointed an outspoken expert and committed advocate of the Olympic idea to its circle. I am very happy for Michael Mronz personally, but also for German sport, which will thus be even better represented in the international network is,” said DOSB President Thomas Weikert.

As an IOC member, Mronz will also be on the DOSB executive board in accordance with the statutes. He is “excited about the responsibility ahead and, together with Britta Heidemann, giving international sport greater visibility,” said Mronz.

There had previously been irritation because the DOSB only found out about the plans for Mronz to be promoted to the IOC shortly before the list of candidates was published. The DOSB can now hope that the clever event manager will become involved in the IOC as an advocate for a possible German Olympic bid in the future.

Mronz brings experience in top sports as managing director of Aachener Reitturnier GmbH. In this role, he increased the reputation of the major equestrian event CHIO. He was also a co-founder of the Rhine-Ruhr Initiative, which sought to apply for the 2032 Olympic Games.
