Monchi could take over as sporting director at Chelsea.
Chelsea’s search for a new sporting director continues and one of the names they would like to lure to Stamford Bridge is Seville’s Monchi, 90min have learned.
The 54-year-old has spent almost 30 years as a player and manager at Sevilla. The only time away from the club was two years at Roma between 2017 and 2019.
Long regarded as one of football’s best sporting directors, Monchi has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League in the past and has already held talks with Manchester United and Arsenal.
After failed attempts to sign Michael Edwards and Christoph Freund, Chelsea continue their search for a new sporting director. 90 mins has learned that Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Blues and interim athletic director, is a big fan of Monchi.
Boehly had extensive contact with Monchi in the summer when Chelsea unsuccessfully courted Jules Kounde, who eventually joined FC Barcelona, and was impressed by the behavior of the Seville director.
However, Monchi’s interest in leaving Sevilla is currently unclear. He was persuaded to leave when he joined Roma in 2017 but only spent two years in Rome before returning to Spain and it remains to be seen if he has an interest in leaving again.
