Although the trend sport has been around in the USA since 1989, “Spikeball” has only gained in importance in Germany in recent years. The popular team game is now a must-have in summer. We explain the rules of the game to you.

Actually, Roundnet is the correct name of this sport, but the word “Spikeball” (a brand name) has prevailed in many places. It translates to “smash ball” and combines two sports: volleyball and four square. The 360-degree trend sport is played with two teams of two players standing in a circle around a small trampoline – a kind of ring around which a net has been stretched. The object of the game is to smash a small ball onto the net in such a way that the opposing team cannot return it and it touches the ground. The whole body may be used to receive or pass the ball. The question arises: When is the game won? Below you will find an overview of the most important game rules of Roundnet.

These are the rules of the game: Spikeball briefly explained

If you spike ball playing for the first time and not (yet) familiar with the process, you can use the following basic rules as a guide:

  1. All players stand in a circle around the net and are allowed to move around each other in a 360 degree radius in all directions when it is their turn to play the ball.
  2. A player smashes the ball into the net so that it bounces up and the opposing team repeatedly hits the ball back into the net with a maximum of three touches until a mistake or foul occurs.
  3. Then it is the other team’s turn – this play alternates back and forth between both teams until the maximum score is reached and the game ends.

Important: When a point is awarded, the right to serve goes to the generic team – and the game starts over.

Scoring: How to win Spikeball

Similar to volleyball, the outcome of the game is decided by points, i.e. the team that comes first always wins 21 points has reached. The rules are also similar – these include the most important ones:

  • Each team may touch the ball a maximum of three times before it is played.
  • All types of ball touches are allowed with any part of the body.
  • When attacking, the ball must touch the net and bounce off it.
  • The opposing team must not be obstructed by anyone.

The opposing team always gets a point if:

  • the ball touches your team after hitting the net.
  • the ball (after three touches) does not touch the net.
  • the ball bounces on the net several times in a row.
  • two wrong serves have been made in a row.
  • the ball touches the trampoline net frame.
  • the ball falls off the net and hits the ground.
