“I am no longer willing to accept that in this rich country there should be no money for our most important asset, children’s minds and their education,” says the SPD party leader – and has a demand.

SPD party leader Saskia Esken has called for closer cooperation between the federal, state and local governments for a better education system. At the federal party conference of the Social Democrats in Berlin on Sunday, she proposed a “German Education Pact”. As part of this pact, the SPD wants to ensure “that educational disadvantages are compensated for as early as possible, that basic skills are reliably acquired in primary schools and that all young people with a qualified school leaving certificate can make a secure transition into professional life.”

From Esken’s point of view, Germany needs to invest money for a better education system. “I am no longer willing to accept that in this rich country there should be no money for our most important asset, the minds of children and their education,” she said. The SPD primarily wants to hold the rich responsible. “We want to make greater use of high inheritances and very high incomes to finance a joint educational development,” says a motion from the SPD party executive committee, which was unanimously accepted by the delegates at the party conference.

Recently, the poor performance of German students in the current international performance study Pisa caused a stir. The authors of the study see the reasons for the results as being, among other things, the corona pandemic. Another possible factor for the results is a lack of language skills. The SPD wants to compensate for educational disadvantages before school begins. “The top goal and first priority is therefore to provide all children with early childhood education before they go to school,” the application states.
