The Spanish survival thriller about the events after a plane crash in the Andes in 1972 won the most prizes in Valladolid. The German actress Sandra Hülser can also celebrate.

The Spanish survival thriller and Oscar nominee “The Snow Society” (“Sociedad de la Nieve”) won the 38th Goya Film Awards. The film by director Juan Antonio Bayona was awarded a total of twelve Goya Awards at the gala on Saturday evening in Valladolid, northern Spain. The two-and-a-half-hour work received including the awards for best film and best director.

The film is about the events following a plane crash in the Andes in 1972, in which 12 of the 45 people on board died instantly. The survivors, members of a rugby team from Uruguay, begin to feed on corpses preserved in ice in the cold. Of the 45 occupants of the plane, 16 were finally rescued after 72 days.

The second successful film in Valladolid was director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren’s feature debut “20,000 Species of Bees” (“20,000 Especies de Abejas”) about the problems of a growing trans child. The story of a summer vacation is told from the child’s perspective. Urresola Solaguren received the awards for best young director and best original screenplay and Ane Gabarain was named best supporting actress.

The German entry “The Teacher’s Room” by Ilker Catak, which was nominated for the best European film category, came away empty-handed. The award was given to the French work “Anatomie einer Fall” (“Anatomie d’une chute”) by director Justine Triet with Sandra Hülser in one of the main roles in the legal drama.

The US actress Sigourney Weaver received the Goya International. She has created a range of unforgettable characters in both comedy and drama, from Ripley in the Alien saga to Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist, wrote the Academy of Arts.
