South Korea: Ex-President Chun Doo Hwan has died – politics

The former head of state died in his home in the west of Seoul, reports South Korean media. The former general, who led an authoritarian military regime from 1980 to 1988, turned 90.

Former South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan is reportedly dead. He died in his home in west Seoul, South Korean broadcaster and the national news agency Yonhap unanimously reported on Tuesday. Chun suffered from chronic illnesses.

The former general, who headed an authoritarian military regime from 1980 to 1988, was 90 years old. Chun and his successor, Roh Tae Woo, were convicted in August 1996 of a 1979 military coup, the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations and corruption. A year later they were pardoned.
