The Eurovision Song Contest dominated the German TV landscape on Saturday evening – especially among younger audiences.

The ESC caused a stir in 2024, including the exclusion of Dutch act Joost Klein (26) just a few hours before the final was broadcast from Malmö, Sweden. However, this apparently had little effect on the ratings, as they were roughly at the same level as the previous year.

A total of eight million watch the ESC

It started on the musical Saturday evening on the first with the format “ESC – The Countdown” presented by Barbara Schöneberger (50), which, according to data from AGF Videoforschung, was tuned in by around 3.84 million viewers, 17.8 percent of the total audience. The final itself then generated significantly greater interest from 9:00 p.m. and the clear victory of the day with a market share of 36.8 percent.

The victory of the Swiss star Nemo (24) with “The Code” and 591 points was also followed by 7.38 million people on the first. According to a statement from NDR, 0.6 million rounded up (3 percent) tuned in via the special interest channel ONE – a total of 7.98 million. According to the media magazine “DWDL” This corresponds almost exactly to the value of the previous year with a total of 7.96 million people. How many people watched the twelfth place for Germany’s representative Isaak (29) in the ARD media library is not taken into account. According to NDR, the live streams were accessed almost 1.4 million times (for technical reasons, only usage until midnight was taken into account).

After the competition, “The Aftershow” for the ESC achieved a market share of 34.5 percent with a viewership of around 2.74 million during the night.

ESC dominates the evening among the younger audience

For viewers aged between 14 and 49 there was absolutely no way around the ESC on Saturday. Attendance at the finale was 2.85 million people and thus a market share of 51.7 percent. The “Countdown” was seen by 1.26 million (31 percent) and the after show had 0.9 million (39.4 percent). This means that the three formats were in first, second and fourth place in a daily comparison – only the “Tagesschau” was able to get in between.
