There have been rumors about new models for a long time

The timing of the announcement may be surprising, but the existence of the new models is not. Rumors about “slim” models of the PlayStation 5 have been floating around the internet for months, and there has also been speculation about an optional drive. Even if Sony doesn’t officially call the new models “Slim”, the new form factor still deserves the name.

The PlayStation 5 was released in November 2020, but was very difficult to obtain for a long time due to the corona pandemic and supply chain problems. Availability only improved massively at the beginning of this year.
