Sony: Playstation 5 Standard versus PS5 Slim

On December 1, 2023, we did something we wouldn’t have expected just a few weeks ago: we swapped one of the consoles on our desk for a new model. Specifically, the original Playstation 5 from the end of 2020 had to go into the hardware storage room; instead we are using the newly released PS5 Slim.

We can save ourselves something like a real test here: The revised version of the Playstation 5 differs in appearance from its bigger brother, but technically almost nothing has changed. Apart from the mass storage – more on that later.

Thanks to a revision, the Slim’s internal processor and memory hardware no longer corresponds to the very first console version, but is identical to the components in the last non-slim PS5.

There is also no meaningfully measurable difference in power consumption. We determined the latter with Astro’s Playroom, Cyberpunk 2077 and Avatar – Frontier of Pandora; the average value can be found in the table.

Playstation 5 disc version

Contrary to what one might assume, this is not an absolutely exact value, because in Avatar, for example, an alien rabbit only has to hop through the picture for energy consumption to shoot up more or less sharply. But ultimately it becomes clear that the Slim does not offer any real advantages due to its more compact design.

By the way, the same applies to the noise development, which seems identical to us – with minimal advantages for the Slim. Our impression: The fan in the previous Playstation 5 is a little quieter, but a little more wind is generated when the waste heat is transported through the nozzle-like openings.

Not all that different: the drive side of the two consoles; An additional SSD can be installed at the top right of the Slim. (Image: Steinlechner/Golem.de) [5/10]

There aren’t any huge differences on the back either. (Image: Steinlechner/Golem.de) [6/10]

A real difference is the built-in SSD, which is larger in the new Slim: It offers a total of 1 TB of space, of which around 830 GB are free after deducting firmware and system files.

That’s at least 160 GB compared to the previous models, which have a capacity of 825 GB. This is usually enough for one to four additional games.
