The major fire in an apartment building in Solingen caused horror on Monday. An entire family was killed, including a small child and an infant. Now there is a first preliminary report – and the public prosecutor’s office assumes arson.

DAccording to a preliminary report, the major fire in an apartment building in Solingen with four deaths was caused by intentional arson. The Wuppertal public prosecutor’s office announced this on Wednesday about the fire in which a father, a mother and two children from a Bulgarian family died on Monday. The parents were 28 and 29 years old, the children were almost three years old and an infant was only five months old.

According to the information, the fire started in the stairwell of the old building. The fire spread to the roof within five minutes due to a so-called chimney effect. “Clear remains of an accelerant” were found in the wooden stairwell. Based on this finding, “intentional arson” must be assumed. There is no evidence of a xenophobic motive.

Dramatic scenes took place on site. When the fire brigade arrived, the wooden stairwell was already fully ablaze, meaning the escape route was blocked. To escape the flames, a man with a child in his arms and a woman jumped out of the building’s windows, a police spokesman reported. One person landed on a car roof even though the fire department had set up a jumping cushion. The fire department deployed up to 120 emergency services. Murder or attempted murder is now being investigated.

The public prosecutor’s office is asking for information

Experts inspected the house, which had become uninhabitable, on Tuesday to clarify the cause of the fire. The initial assessment by the experts was “clear,” the public prosecutor said. North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister Herbert Reul reacted with emotion after the major fire. “My thoughts are with those who lost their lives in the fire and with their families. I wish the injured that they recover quickly,” explained the CDU politician.

The public was now called upon to help clear up the fire. The Wuppertal public prosecutor’s office asks all citizens who can provide information to call 0202 284 1122.
