Dubai is the land of superlatives, but China is keeping up. The metropolis of Shanghai has wrested the “highest restaurant” award from the city-state.

If you want to aim high when it comes to enjoyment, you are in good hands in Shanghai. No restaurant in the world – not counting airplanes and space stations – dines closer to the clouds than the Heavenly Jin restaurant at the top of the Shanghai Tower. The record height has now also been recognized by Guinness World Records, awarding it the “tallest restaurant in a building” award. Dubai thus loses its position as the leader.

The futuristic skyscraper in the Chinese metropolis is 632 meters and 128 floors high. This makes the spectacular building the third tallest building in the world. The record is still held by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which at 828 meters rises almost 200 meters further into the sky and whose restaurant “At.mosphere” previously held the crown of the tallest restaurant.

Fine dining at dizzy heights

The J Hotel is at the top of the Shanghai Tower, and the associated restaurant is on the 120th floor. Dining is around 556 meters above the ground, there is space for 256 people. Anyone who has had enough of the panoramic view over the mega-city can watch the chefs at work. A highlight of the luxury restaurant is the open kitchen. A culinary mix of modern European, Japanese and fine Chinese cuisine is served, prepared by top chefs from different countries.

The hotel, which opened just last year, is part of the Jin Jiang International Hotels chain, which in turn is majority-owned by the Chinese state and isn’t made for everyone. Guests not only have to be free from giddiness, but also have a big bank account. According to the website, a normal room costs from around 560 euros per night.

Also in China is the “tallest revolving restaurant in a building” according to Guinness World Records. In the “Twist”, on the 106th floor of the Canton Tower in Guangzhou, guests dine at almost 423 meters. However, Bolivia can call its own the highest restaurant in the world. The Chacaltaya in the ski resort of the same name has its address at an altitude of 5340 meters.
