The departments of Haute-Savoie and of Ain are in orange vigilance this Friday, December 9, 2022 for “snow-ice”. 20 others are on yellow alert, in a band from the center to the east, from Creuse to Haut-Rhin and further north of France, between the Channel and the North.

Météo France is preparing to increase vigilance “snow and ice”because “France is located at the crossroads of a cold air mass coming from Greenland and milder and humid air masses coming from the south”, sums up, for Actu.fr, meteorologist Yann Amice. And, at the same time, “small areas of snowfall will wander over a large northern half”, he explains.

Freezing rain and a thin film of snow in the plains

As announced for several days, the risks of freezing rain and snowflakes on the plain will increase, and this, probably until December 14 or 15, 2022, at least.

This Friday, December 9, 2022, a disturbance is rising over the south-east and Corsica with heavy rains, often stormy. The departments of Alpes-Maritimes and Var have been placed on yellow vigilance “waves-submersion”.

“After this episode in a central and eastern part of France, other conflict zones will cause freezing rain or more likely a little snow on the plain,” said Yann Amice.

Heavy snowfall in the Alps

As a result, over the next few days and this weekend of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December 2022, a very thin film of snow could well cover many areas in the north of the country, in Brittany, Normandy and Hauts-de-France and even in Paris. A weather cocktail that should be on the menu for early next week as well.

This weekend, maximum daytime temperatures will generally be between 2 and 3°C or even lower over a large part of northern France, with morning frosts between -2 and -5°C.

In the mountains, in the Alps, the accumulation of snow promises to be substantial. Haute-Savoie and Ain are on orange vigilance, Savoie, Isère, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, and Alpes-Maritimes are on yellow “avalanche” vigilance and should remain so .

Uncertainty remains for the moment on the duration of this cold period, with a thaw not expected before the middle of next week.
