Data theft at ATMs in Germany is becoming obsolete. Both the number of tampering with machines and the damage caused by such “skimming” attacks have continued to fall in the current year, as the Frankfurt facility, Euro Card Systems, announced. From January up to and including November 2021, criminals manipulated ATMs 116 times nationwide in order to spy out card data and PINs from bank customers. In the same period of the previous year 134 cases were counted, in 2020 as a whole there were 152. Individual machines may have been attacked several times. The gross damage from “skimming” sank to just 330,000 euros. In the same period of the previous year it was a little more than one million euros, in 2020 as a whole it was around 1.06 million euros. Investing in more security reduces the amount of damage. Much greater damage occurs in Germany from theft or loss of payment cards.
