Mohamed Simakan headbutted Bakery Jatta in the cup but stayed on the pitch.

RB Leipzig had no problems with HSV in the 4-0 victory in the DFB Cup. Perhaps the game would have been even more exciting if Mohamed Simakan had seen the red card.

When the score was 2-0, the Frenchman allowed himself to be carried away and hit HSV attacker Bakery Jatta in the head. However, Simakan only saw a yellow card – since the VAR is not yet used in the 2nd round of the cup, Benjamin Cortus’ decision could not be challenged.

The fact that Simakan made it 3-0 in the 69th minute is not without a certain irony. After that, HSV didn’t feel like laughing.

“We don’t need to discuss that at all. I don’t know why he didn’t punish it. If he doesn’t see it at all, it’s something else. But yellow for the scene – it’s difficult not to get upset about it,” complained the sports director Jonas Boldt (via table football). His trainer Tim Walter also had a clear opinion on the scene: “That was a headbutt by Simakan. And consequently actually a red card.”

Luck was probably on Simakan’s side because Jatta didn’t fall to the ground theatrically after the headbutt, but stayed standing. Commendable from Hamburger – but referee Cortus should have acted accordingly.

Leipzig coach Marco Rose also didn’t find his protégé’s action particularly blatant and announced that he would “of course” talk to the defender about it: “He mustn’t let himself be carried away. Not good, not nice.”
