Bavaria’s Agriculture Minister Michaela Kaniber (CSU) is expected to stay in the hospital for a few days after a traffic accident. A ministry spokesman said Tuesday. It is not yet clear how long she will have to stay there.

Kaniber was involved in an accident with her company car near Siegsdorf in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein on Monday morning, in which three people were injured. As the police announced, a 22-year-old Austrian drove her car shortly after 10 a.m. on the district road from Neukirchen in the direction of Siegsdorf. In doing so, she veered left into the oncoming lane for an unknown reason. A 58-year-old woman from Siegsdorf who was coming in her car wanted to, but could not avoid it, her vehicle skidded and then apparently hit the minister’s car.

Kaniber and her driver are in a hospital and should remain there for observation. Both are doing according to the circumstances, said a ministry spokesman on Monday when asked by the SZ and the German Press Agency. There was initially no official information on the specific injuries.

Kaniber was on her way from her Berchtesgadener Land constituency to the Munich Ministry of Agriculture, which the 45-year-old has headed since 2018. The district road near Siegsdorf was completely closed for hours as a result of the accident, the Traunstein police station was on site with several patrols, as were rescue services and the fire brigade. An accident report was ordered by the public prosecutor’s office in Traunstein.
