Shots in downtown Bielefeld: Former professional boxer killed

In Bielefeld’s old town, several shots were fired near the Kunsthalle on Saturday evening (09.03) around 6:30 p.m. According to eyewitnesses, a group of men approached the victim before the shots were fired. The man died from his injuries on site.

Perpetrator on the run

The group of men is on the run. Witnesses tell Radio Bielefeld that she was in a café on Obernstrasse before the crime. Her victim is said to have left a hair salon when shots were fired.

Fatal victim: Boxer Besar Nimani

The dead person is said to be the 38-year-old former Bielefeld professional boxer Besar Nimani. He had already been the victim of a shooting in 2013. At that time, the crime took place in a kebab shop at the intersection of Feilenstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse. Nimani was shot at that time too. Two bullets hit his thigh and knee.

Nimani was of Kosovo-Albanian origin. In 1997 he moved to Bielefeld. He won the European light middleweight title and lost only once in his professional career.

No danger to “uninvolved third parties”

The police did not provide any information on Saturday evening, only confirmed the shooting in the city center, that there was a 38-year-old victim with Kosovar nationality and that the perpetrator or perpetrators were on the run. The police also stated that there was no danger to “uninvolved third parties.”

Homicide squad investigates

Parts of the city center around the crime scene were cordoned off. A murder squad began the investigation, questioned witnesses and, for example, examined a car-sharing car from the provider Cambio, where a bullet had apparently hit.
