Rejected shortly before the birth: Lauren and Steve Banks from New Bern in North Carolina became parents for the second time on March 23. But instead of delivering in the delivery room, Lauren had to deliver her baby in the front seat of her car.

Lauren Banks went into labor a week before her due date. Her husband drove her to the Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern. However, since her cervix had only opened four centimeters, the doctor responsible sent Lauren away again. Lauren told the Raleigh News & Observer that she was told the hospital was full and she wouldn’t be admitted until she was in active labour, and that wasn’t until two inches.

“He said he was sorry I was in pain but there was no medical reason to keep me. At that point I was crying my eyes out on all fours on the bed. If it wasn’t labor then I was lying probably dying,” Lauren recalls with gallows humor of the conversation with the doctor.

Birth in the hospital parking lot

Her husband Steve drove her home despite the pain. But as soon as she got there, Lauren knew: the baby wants to be born. The couple got back in the car and headed to another hospital.

But until then they didn’t make it. Lauren’s waters had already broken. Steve stopped the car in a store parking lot and called 911. Then everything happened very quickly. “I watched my wife give birth to my son in the parking lot,” he told WITN. The little one was “purple and doesn’t make much noise,” which caused his parents great concern. Fortunately, the paramedics arrived quickly. “I’m sure they played a big part in making sure everything went so smoothly and there were no complications. I can’t thank them enough,” said the new dad.

Parents expect apology from the hospital

The paramedics then brought Lauren back to the hospital of all places, from which she had previously been turned away. “When we got there, one of the nurses looked at me like she’d seen a ghost,” she recalls.

A spokesman for the hospital told McClatchy News that it could not comment on the case due to patient privacy laws, but denied the story: “Carolina East has never turned anyone out of the hospital and never would.” However, it is actually the case that certain pregnancy criteria must be met before a pregnant woman can be admitted. “Unfortunately, babies don’t always live up to expectations,” the hospital said. “The Banks baby certainly made an unexpected appearance but we are so happy that he is healthy and precious and we wish the family well.”

However, the Banks feel their little Truett, as they called their son, “deserved better than what he got.” She expects an apology from the clinic and the doctor’s bills to be taken care of.
