Status: 04.01.2022 4 p.m.

With the development of the metal supermarket shopping trolley, Caddy became famous more than 90 years ago. The French company has now filed for bankruptcy – for the third time in ten years.

The French shopping trolley manufacturer Caddy has filed for bankruptcy. Company boss Stéphane Dedieu was confident of finding a buyer for the troubled company with currently 140 employees in the coming weeks. “At the moment we have no candidates, but the process is only just beginning,” he said after the trial in Saverne.

“The state of the company is catastrophic. The most important thing is to keep the jobs,” emphasized the lawyer for the staff council, Hervé Bertrand. The company owes seven million euros to its suppliers alone.

Third bankruptcy within ten years

In 1928 the company developed the metal shopping trolley for supermarkets, which was named “caddy” after the trolley used to transport golf clubs. The brand name has entered French usage for shopping trolleys of all kinds.

It is the third time in ten years that Caddy has filed for bankruptcy. The company currently has a single production facility in Dettwiller, Alsace. It is 70 percent owned by the Polish company Damix, which cut around 50 jobs in 2020
