Shooting leaves two dead, six injured in Memphis

A shooting once again leaves the United States in mourning. Two people were killed and six others injured during a block party Saturday in Memphis, local police reported.

Two individuals were found dead at the scene and one of the six injured was hospitalized “in critical condition,” police in the town located in the state of Tennessee wrote on X.

A recurring scourge

The shooting took place during an unauthorized block party that brought together some 200 to 300 people near Memphis’ Orange Mound Park.

With more guns than people, the United States has the highest gun death rate of any developed country. Shootings are a recurring scourge that successive governments have so far been powerless to stem, with many Americans remaining very attached to their weapons.

The NGO Gun Violence Archive, which qualifies as mass shootings those which leave at least four dead or injured, has counted 120 since January 1 in the United States. In 2023, there were 656 mass shootings recorded.
