Ship sunk, several missing after two cargo ships collide in North Sea

This Tuesday morning, around 5 a.m., two cargo ships collided in the North Sea, we learned from the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Shipwrecks (DGZRS). The accident between the “Polesie” and “Verity” occurred approximately 22 km southwest of the island of Heligoland and 31 km northeast of the island of Langeoog, in German waters.

According to the sea operations command cell, the cargo ship “Verity”, a 91 m long British cargo ship, sank while the other ship, 190 m long under the Bahamas flag, continues to move. Significant rescue resources dispatched to the area made it possible to save a person who had fallen into the sea, who was treated. On the other hand, “several other people are currently missing”, specifies the DGZRS. The search for the castaways is underway.

Difficult weather conditions

In addition to the maritime resources, made up of two sea rescue cruisers, a tugboat and a cruise ship and a maritime police launch, a German navy helicopter is flying over the area to try to find the missing. The search is complicated by strong winds and seas formed by three-meter troughs.
