Sexism criticism: “Smash or Pass” website lets users rate photos of AI women

Watch the video: Developers criticized – this sexist website lets users rate photos of AI women.

“Smash or Pass” – in German something to do with someone or push the person off the edge of the bed;

This is the motto of the smashorpass.ai website. The principle is simple, users should decide with a click whether they would sleep with an AI-generated woman or not.

Behind it is apparently Emmet Halm, who lives in the USA and claims to be a developer, founder and Harvard graduate.

“Guys, you know what to do,” posts on the news service “X”, formerly Twitter, as an accompanying text to a short trailer on the website.

In addition to this questionable video, Halm explains other alleged motives at “X”:

So the goal of “Smash or Pass” is to develop the best AI for personalized picture recommendations:

“SmashOrPassAI is a self-improving system. The more you swipe, the more it finds out your ‘type’.”

Halm leaves unanswered the question as to why the AI is trained specifically for the attractiveness of women. According to him, the servers are already reaching their load limit.

At “X” the site is met with mixed reactions. Some comment “disgusting” and “objectifying” and draw parallels with “Meta” founder Mark Zuckerberg, who created a similar app while studying at Harvard. Others think the accusations of sexism are exaggerated.

In fact, developer Emmet Halm didn’t invent the “smash or pass” concept. It is a popular game among US YouTubers, but also in German-speaking countries – in which the attractiveness of prominent personalities is often rated. There are also several apps with the same principle in popular app stores. “Smash or Pass” is also used as a slogan in youth slang. “Smash” was the German youth word of the year 2022.
