A cable duct was apparently also damaged in an embankment fire at Hamburg’s Sternschanze train station on Thursday evening. This leads to massive impairments in long-distance traffic today.

As a result, there were long queues in front of the information desks at the Hamburg train stations. And there were also a lot of people waiting on the platforms. The disturbances will probably continue throughout Friday, said a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn. For example, the ICE trains between Kiel and Hamburg, Hanover and Hamburg and also the trains to the south are delayed by 30 minutes. ICE trains between Hamburg and Berlin only run every two hours and are also delayed in the Hamburg area by around 30 minutes.

Some trains only go to Altona instead of to the main station

IC trains between Hamburg and Denmark start or end in Hamburg-Altona instead of at the main station. Travelers can reach the other station with the S-Bahn.

Deutsche Bahn informed on their website about the current disruptions. The impairments will probably last until noon.

Embankment fire triggers temporary route closure

On Thursday evening there was a cable fire near Sternschanze station, on the so-called connecting railway, which runs from Altona via Diebsteich, Sternschanze and Dammtor to the main station. It is one of the busiest routes in Germany. At the moment, however, only a maximum of three trains per hour can run on the route, said the railway spokesman. All communication on this route between the interlockings runs via the affected cable, and the switches and signals are controlled via it.
