Serious bus accident with many deaths in Venice

A bus fell off a bridge in Venice, northern Italy. At least 20 people died. There are said to be numerous injuries. The mayor speaks of an “apocalyptic scene.”

At least 20 people have died in a bus accident in the northern Italian city of Venice. This was reported by the Ansa news agency, citing the prefecture. Accordingly, the bus fell from an elevated road onto the railway tracks. The accident occurred in the Mestre district, which is on the mainland. The cause of the accident is still unclear.

Sky Italia reported that 18 bodies had been recovered from the rubble so far. The bus caught fire. There are numerous injuries. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro spoke on X, formerly Twitter, of a “great tragedy” and “apocalyptic scene” for which there are no words. We mourn in memory of the numerous victims.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her condolences on X. She is “in close contact” with Mayor Brugnaro and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.
