Series of the Month: Stranger Things 4, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Rising – Media

Tschugger

He is a very special Tschugger: David Constantin as Bax.

What’s the matter? Police officers are called in the Swiss canton of Valais chugger, and a very special example is Bax (David Constantin), a “Big Lebowski” of the Alps and the embodiment of police incompetence. Bax and his colleague Pirmin become embroiled in an attempted murder of a colleague involving a wannabe gangster rapper, a whiny construction magnate and the northern Italian Sugo Mafia. A wonderfully consistent slapstick with alpine seventies cop series flair.

Secret Star: Comedian Cedric Schild plays the lisping police intern Patrick in such an unshakably good-natured manner that one feels like hugging him.

Not suitable for: Alpine romantics. They might not like the fact that idyllic Valais degenerates into a kind of Gotham City in the Fold Mountains over the course of the series. Timo Posselt

Sky, five episodes.

mafia queens

Show of the Month May: Dori (Rita) and Lizzie (Dana Ivgy) are now the bosses of the Malka clan.

What’s the matter? A few bursts of fire from the submachine gun and then hardly any of the men in the Malka family are alive. From now on, the women of the clan have to take care of their mafia-related business around Tel Aviv. But they have no idea who owes them money and who in turn owes them a debt. Who are their friends, who are their enemies. They have to learn that painfully and experience a number of humiliations. But they are tough. And always very funny too.

Secret Star: Aunt Tzipi, played by Orly Silbersatz Banai, about whom others say: If you transplanted your brain into a bird, it would jump around like a kangaroo. Definitely married into the wrong family.

Not suitable for: Machos and people who have a problem with cynical humor. Stephen Fisher

Arte, eleven episodes.

The Rising

Series of the month May: Neve (Clara Rugaard) tries to solve the murder of himself.

What’s the matter? Neve wakes up in the middle of a lake in northern England, swims ashore and goes home – only to find that no one can see or hear her anymore. She finds it difficult at first to be dead, but above all she doesn’t know what happened – only that she was at a party with other young people. Now she participates as best she can in solving the murder of herself.

Secret Star: The rugged landscape of the north of England, which makes a particularly good backdrop for crime series with a twist of the supernatural.

Not suitable for: Crusaders in logic. Susan Vahabzadeh

Sky, eight episodes.

Stranger Things 4

Show of the Month May: Even scarier in season 4: the kids have grown up (here Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield), but the evil in Hawkins is still not defeated.

What’s the matter? Back in the evil-stricken town of Hawkins. The protagonists, twelve years old in season 1, have outgrown their series parents and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) seems to have found some normalcy. But in the warm light of 1986, the dark other side of Hawkins, the terrible “Upside Down” mixes again.

Secret Star: Special credit goes to soon-to-be 21-year-old Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas on the show) for trying to look 15 after his apparent growth spurt since last season.

Not suitable for: Everyone who hoped that the horror part would finally be reduced. Aurelie von Blazekovic

Netflix, nine episodes, second part from July 1st.

Obi Wan Kenobi

Show of the Month May: British English is back in the galaxy: Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan.

What’s the matter? Obi-Wan Kenobi is hiding in the desert from the pursuit of the Jedi and tries to process a trauma: his student Anakin Skywalker has become the nasty Darth Vader despite all his efforts. It’s looking bleak again in the “Star Wars” galaxy. But an assignment Obi-Wan can’t refuse takes him out of his cave and into battle against the Empire.

Secret Star: Hayden Christensen, who played the adult Anakin in the much-maligned Star Wars theatrical prequels. He’s back, so much can be revealed.

Not suitable for: Baby Yoda Ultras. An appearance of the cute mini alien from “The Mandalorian” and “Boba Fett” should not be expected in this series. Instead, two other special children appear. Kathleen Hildebrand

Disney Plus, six episodes.

The Essex Serpent

May's Show of the Month: Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston on the - maybe - haunted Essex coast.

Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston on the – maybe – haunted Essex coast.

(Photo: AppleTV+)

What’s the matter? England, 19th century – a wealthy, scientifically interested widow (Claire Danes) moves to a coastal town where a giant water snake is said to frighten the residents and meets a vicar (Tom Hiddleston) who is far too good-looking for the provinces. The best-selling film adaptation is a grand metaphor for sinfulness, superstition, and the menace of social conventions, especially for women.

Secret Star: Of course the snake. The ripples in Essex’s brackish waters are a stylish element of horror in director Clio Barnard’s stunning landscape shots.

Not suitable for: horror fans. The series soon swings into the romance lane and says goodbye to the ripples in the water. Kathleen Hildebrand

AppleTV+, six episodes.
