Serial killer Charles Sobhraj, aka ‘The Serpent’, released from prison

Imprisoned in Nepal for nearly twenty years for the murder of two North American tourists, the French serial killer Charles Sobhraj was released and then expelled from the country. The man, nicknamed “The Serpent”, arrived this Saturday, December 24 in France.

The “Snake” released. French serial killer Charles Sobhraj, imprisoned in Nepal since 2003, was released from prison on Friday December 23 before being sent back to France, where he returned on Saturday.

The Supreme Court, the highest court in Nepal, had ordered his release, considering that the 78-year-old man was no longer in condition to continue his detention due to heart problems.

“Keeping him continuously in jail is inconsistent with the prisoner’s human rights,” reads the copy of the verdict. “If there are no other cases pending against him to keep him in prison, this court orders his release today and (…) the return to his country within fifteen days”.

A murderous life

If he has been imprisoned since the beginning of the 2000s for the murder of two North American tourists, Charles Sobhraj is involved in no less than twenty murders.

He was found guilty of at least nine of them, conducting a similar MO on his crimes. “The Serpent” drugged and robbed his victims, most of whom were tourists who had come to discover Asia.

His character had also inspired netflix for a mini-series, with Tahar Rahim in the title role.
