After the Russian army’s heavy airstrikes last night, the death toll in Ukraine has risen to at least 22. 20 people alone were killed when a residential building in the city of Uman was shelled.

In Ukraine, the death toll after the heavy attacks by Russia on Friday night has risen to at least 22. According to the authorities, a residential building was hit in the city of Uman, south of Kiev, killing at least 20 people. Two children aged 10 are said to be among the victims.

A total of 109 people were registered in the destroyed part of the house, it said. 27 apartments were completely destroyed. Rescuers continued to search the building for survivors.

At least two people were killed in the attacks in the city of Dnipro further east, Mayor Borys Filatow said. The fatalities were a young woman and a three-year-old child.

Kyiv shelled for the first time in 51 days

For the first time in 51 days, Kiev was also shelled with cruise missiles. The head of the military administration, Serhiy Popko, said there were no civilian casualties and no damage to residential buildings or infrastructure was reported.

According to the Ukrainian army, 21 of 23 Russian cruise missiles were shot down across the country, 11 of them over Kiev. The country’s missile defense was recently massively strengthened by the delivery of state-of-the-art defense systems by the western allies.

Information on the course of the war, shelling and casualties provided by official bodies of the Russian and Ukrainian conflict parties cannot be directly checked by an independent body in the current situation.

Selenskyj speaks of “Night of Terror”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyj spoke of a “night of terror”. He was convinced that the attacks would bring Moscow closer to “failure and punishment”. “Every attack, every perverse act against our country and people brings the terror state closer to failure and punishment,” he said. “There must be a just counterattack by Ukraine and the world against Russian terror. And that will happen.”

For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had bombed “temporary deployment points of reserve units of the Ukrainian armed forces” with “high-precision weapons”. “All assigned targets have been hit.”

The main theater of war is currently eastern Ukraine. From there, the authorities deployed by Moscow in Donetsk reported that seven people had been killed and more than ten others injured by Ukrainian shelling. Both a hospital and residential buildings were hit.

Moscow: Bakhmut damaged but can be rebuilt

The city of Bakhmut, which has been almost completely destroyed and is apparently largely occupied by Russian troops, has been particularly hard fought for weeks. Apparently as a sign of control over the city, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Chusnullin said he had visited Bakhmut. “The city is damaged, but you can rebuild it,” he explained on Telegram.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said preparations for Ukraine’s expected counter-offensive were nearing completion. “The equipment was promised, prepared and partly delivered,” he emphasized, referring to Western arms deliveries. Regarding the spring offensive expected in the near future, he said: “In the broadest sense, we are ready.”
