Manuela Schwesig was re-elected as Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Schwerin. The SPD politician received the required simple majority for her second term in the first ballot.
41 of the 79 members of the new state parliament in Schwerin Castle voted for Schwesig. The red-red coalition of the SPD and the Left has 43 state parliament mandates. There were three abstentions and 35 votes against. Schwesig took her oath of office with the religious affirmation “So help me God”. The 47-year-old has been at the head of an SPD / CDU government since 2017. After the election, Schwesig wants to appoint the four ministers in her cabinet. The first meeting of the new cabinet is scheduled for the evening. Simone Oldenburg (left) is planned as Minister of Education and Deputy Prime Minister. Six of the ministerial posts go to the SPD, two to the left.

Coalition agreement approved almost unanimously
After noiseless coalition negotiations and stressed harmony, the red-red state government wants to take up government work on Monday evening. “We are looking forward to the fact that we can get started with the departure in 2030,” said Schwesig at the weekend. Oldenburg once again emphasized the great similarities between the two parties, that it was “a common departure for our Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania”. On Saturday the SPD and the Left signed their coalition agreement as the basis for the work of the joint state government. The draft had previously been approved almost unanimously by the state party conventions of the two parties.
