The Chancellor wanted memes and got them, but that’s now over: the facial injuries from a sports accident have healed to the point that Scholz can perform again without an eye patch.

A week and a half after his jogging accident, Chancellor Olaf Scholz appeared without an eye patch for the first time. During a speech at the peace meeting of the Catholic Community of Sant’Egidio in Berlin, the head of government appeared without the medical accessory.

Bruises and abrasions on the face have largely healed, only traces of the injuries can still be seen under the right eye and on the tip of the nose. At the G20 summit in India at the weekend, the Chancellor showed up wearing an eye patch. The 65-year-old had to wear these after he fell while jogging and fell on his face.

“I’m looking forward to the memes”

The Chancellor’s somewhat daring pirate look attracted a lot of attention after the accident, especially on social media. Scholz himself presented the new look on Platform Memes are images shared on social media with often humorous comments. There were plenty of them, including references to pirate films.

For example, edited images of the Chancellor with a pirate hat and a parrot on his shoulder spread. The Pirate Party commented on X: “We are Chancellor!” And Scholz’s own parliamentary group wrote in response to his comment “The issue of nuclear power is a dead horse in Germany” and the Scholz photo: “You should see the horse.”

Mockers even advised the Chancellor to wear the eye patch permanently to make his appearance more striking.
