Schleswig-Holstein: Green light for Northvolt battery factory

As of: January 23, 2024 9:20 a.m

Nothing stands in the way of building a battery factory near Heide. On Monday evening, the municipal council of Norderwöhrden in the Dithmarschen district also approved the project.

Four local politicians voted for the project, three voted against the construction of the factory in the packed hall of the inn. Two community representatives did not take part in the vote due to bias. The region now faces major challenges in expanding the infrastructure, said Norderwöhrden’s mayor Kay Uwe Evers (Free Voters’ Association of Norderwöhrden). “For this we urgently need support from the federal and state governments.” But the project also offers great opportunities, says Evers.

Lohe-Rickelshof agreed on Thursday

At the beginning of January, the EU Commission had already approved federal and state funding for the construction of a battery cell factory for electric cars. Last Thursday, the community of Lohe-Rickelshof approved the project. In Dörpshus, the twelve local politicians unanimously decided in favor of the project.

This is what Northvolt’s battery factory near Heide should look like.

Billion investment in Dithmarschen

The Swedish company’s plans include investments of 4.5 billion euros. Northvolt wants to produce battery cells for electric cars in the factory. Production is scheduled to start in 2026. 3,000 jobs are to be created. “The first wind farm in Germany was once built in Dithmarschen, and now the most sustainable battery cells will soon be built here,” said the managing director of Northvolt in Germany, Christofer Haux.
