The worst fears have been confirmed. Schalke’s Leo Greiml (22) tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee in the friendly against Twente Enschede (2:2)!

Bitter diagnosis for defensive ace Leo Greiml!
Schalke confirmed the bitter diagnosis with an MRI scan. Sports Director André Hechelmann (38) on the bad news: “The injury is incredibly bitter for Leo. Up until the game against Enschede, he was very stable in the pre-season. We are infinitely sorry for this heavy setback. We will do everything we can to help Leo find his way back into the team.”
For Greiml it is already the second cruciate ligament tear in his career. At that time he had to be substituted in the Rapid Vienna outfit in the game against TSV Hartberg – after a duel with ex-Schalke player Donis Avdijaj (26).
But these were not the only serious knee injuries he suffered in his career: in October 2022 he was out for several months with a meniscus injury.
Before the kick-off at Hamburger SV (28 July), Schalke now only have three central defenders in Marcin Kaminski (31), Ibrahima Cissé (22) and Henning Matriciani (23). And Reis said of the completely unpredictable Cissé: “Between genius and madness…”. The defensive giant also needed some time to stabilize in the friendly against Enschede.
The Greiml injury increases the pressure on sports director André Hechelmann (38). Transfer of Timo Baumgartl (27 / PSV Eindhoven) finally clear – ideally before the start of the second division.
