Schalke earthquake! Schroeder gives up
This is unexpected!
Sports director Rouven Schröder (47) leaves FC Schalke 04 prematurely. This was announced by the royal blues on Wednesday afternoon. Actually, he still had a contract until 2024.
In a statement, the club wrote: “The architect of the promotion team had informed the board that he wanted to leave the club for personal reasons before the end of the contract. This wish are Dr. Bernd Schröder, Christina Rühl-Hamers and Peter Knäbel followed.”
Schröder: “The decision to leave Schalke 04 was anything but easy for me. Together we have experienced 18 highly intense months. I am very grateful to the board and all employees for the trust and the time together.”

Schröder only started as sports director at the Ruhrpott-Klub last summer and put together the team that secured direct promotion back to the Bundesliga last season.
According to BILD information, Schröder already agreed with Gladbach last winter that he should succeed Max Eberl (49/now RB Leipzig) at Borussia. However, Schalke refused to release him.
After the weak start to the current season (one win from eleven league games), Schröder was looking for a successor to Frank Kramer (50), who was fired a week ago. It is possible that he now pulled the ripcord because of an internal quarrel about the successor.
Sport director Peter Knäbel (56) and his team will take over Schröder’s duties until further notice. For the time being Schalke is without a coach and sports director and is in 18th place in the Bundesliga table.
