Sex and techno – that’s what Berlin’s KitKatClub stands for. Now his story is being made into a film.

The KitKatClub is one of the notorious places in Berlin’s nightlife. Now it’s becoming the stuff of the movies.

The Austrian director Philipp Fussenegger (“Henry”) tells the story of the club known for sex and excessive parties and its founder Kirsten Krüger in a documentary. “KitKatClub – Life is a circus” should be finished next year.

“The idea had been around for a long time,” says Fussenegger (32), who studied in Cologne and is a regular guest at KitKat himself. The decisive impetus came from the founder during the corona pandemic, when Berlin nightlife lay fallow. He himself was there for the first time about seven years ago and felt there as an individualist among like-minded people. In the film he wants to tell about free love and open sexuality and the different generations that the club connects. “It’s not a voyeuristic look, but you’ll definitely see something.”

A tribute

In the concept for the documentary, Fussenegger explains: “For me, the film began as a homage to the legendary club, but is increasingly becoming a film about the unique people behind it, above all Kirsten, of course, whom I have come to know and appreciate over the years as the woman who holds everything together.” As soon as he entered the club for the first time, he was immediately captivated by its special magic.

The producer is Cordula Kablitz-Post, who once accompanied Christoph Schlingensief in his film work and is known for the Arte series “Through the night with…”. The documentation is supported by the Film Fund with 100,000 euros.

The club was founded in the 90s. It had changing addresses, and for a long time it can be found at the Heinrich-Heine-Straße underground station near the Spree. A test center moved there during the corona pandemic.
