An explosion in a rescue station in Saxony-Anhalt caused millions in damage. The fire brigade and rescue workers were on site with a larger contingent.

In Osterweddingen in Saxony-Anhalt there was a detonation in a rescue station on Thursday morning. The building was destroyed in the fire that followed. As the district of Börde announced on Thursday, according to the private operator of the rescue station, damage amounted to millions.

A police spokesman for the German Press Agency said that during the routine check of an oxygen bottle, there were sparks for reasons that are still unclear. An ambulance immediately caught fire in the garage. The two paramedics left the scene of the fire and the explosion happened shortly thereafter. The debris had spread widely, smaller parts had flown up to 20 meters further, it said.

Paramedics slightly injured

One of the two paramedics suffered minor injuries, police said. The fire brigade and rescue workers were on site with a larger contingent, a total of ten vehicles were involved. The operation lasted several hours.

According to the district, the rescue service for this area has been covered by surrounding rescue services, including the state capital Magdeburg. First, the “Volksstimme” reported online about the explosion.
