The Italian authorities allow a ship belonging to the aid organization “Doctors Without Borders” to dock in Taranto. On board are more than 100 migrants rescued from distress at sea.

The ship “Geo Barents” brings 106 people rescued from distress in the Mediterranean Sea to Italy. According to the aid organization Doctors Without Borders, which operates the ship, the authorities in Rome have assigned the port of the southern Italian city of Taranto as the port of call.

Migrants had left Turkey

The crew of the “Geo Barents” rescued the refugees and migrants from distress last Sunday in the Italian search and rescue zone. According to its own statements, the ship was on its way to the operational area when the crew was made aware of the emergency by the Italian authorities. Accordingly, those seeking protection had started the crossing from Turkey.

Deadly escape route

In addition to the “Geo Barents”, the “Open Arms Uno” is currently cruising the Mediterranean. The ship belonging to the Spanish organization of the same name also took around 100 refugees on board on August 17.

With 1161 dead and missing so far this year, the Mediterranean is one of the most dangerous escape routes in the world. Only the ships of some aid organizations are on the lookout for refugees in distress at sea. There is no state-supported mission.
