Extinguishing work on a major fire in Berlin is ongoing

Dark smoke in the sky in the west of Berlin: A fire broke out on a company premises in the Lichterfelde district on Friday. The fire department is still extinguishing the fire.
During the major fire in a metal technology company in In Berlin-Lichterfelde, the extinguishing work continues one day after the fire broke out. “Re-extinguishing work is still ongoing,” said a fire department spokesman on Saturday. Fires repeatedly flared up in the rubble of the building. The emergency services would have to tear down parts of the building in order to better get to the sources of the fire.
The spokesman said that around 50 emergency services were still on duty on Saturday morning. According to him, the extinguishing work will probably last the entire Saturday. The population is asked to continue to keep their windows closed. Odors may still occur. The German Red Cross (DRK) and the German Life Saving Society (DRLG) used their technology to measure air pollutants on Friday.
Since Friday evening, forces from the Technical Relief Agency have been working to prevent contaminated fire-fighting water and fire-fighting foam from entering the sewage system or the Teltow Canal, which is not far away. That was successful, said the fire department spokesman. A disposal company has set up large tanks in which the contaminated fire-fighting water is collected.

The building could no longer be entered while the fire was being extinguished. A huge cloud of smoke had formed over western Berlin.
