Samsung has been distributing the One UI 6.1 update to the Galaxy S23 series models, the Z Fold 5, the Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Tab S9 series tablets since March 28th. After the update, a new button can be seen in many system apps on the devices. The button has 3 stars as a symbol and appears, among other things, in the gallery, on the keyboard, in the “Samsung Notes” app, in the audio recorder and in the “Samsung Internet” browser. What’s it all about?
You can access the Galaxy AI using the button. This is a generative artificial intelligence developed by the South Korean manufacturer itself that takes work off your hands in the respective apps. Samsung has trained its own so-called Large Language Model (LLM) for this purpose and does not use an existing one like ChatGPT. An image generator is also part of Galaxy AI.
Shortcut to call the Galaxy AI
In the gallery, for example, you can use Galaxy AI to remove objects from photos or move them – without requiring in-depth image editing knowledge. Galaxy AI also takes care of removing annoying reflections or shadows from images for you. In the browser you can use the button to summarize or translate texts on websites. When it comes to the summary, you can choose between a short and a long form. When writing, Galaxy AI supports you with wording suggestions or optionally translates your messages into other languages.
She can transcribe interviews in the audio recorder. You can also have phone calls translated by Galaxy AI – even in real time. The AI supports 13 languages so far. You can get a first impression of the capabilities of Galaxy AI in the YouTube video above.
What happens to your data?
When it comes to the topic of “artificial intelligence,” there are of course legitimate questions about the protection of your data. Samsung processes the data partly on your device and partly in the cloud – depending on which function you wanted to use. Galaxy AI: Which functions run on the device and which in the cloud
Samsung also assures you that you have the option to prohibit the use of your data to train the Galaxy AI.
However, if you want to use Galaxy AI, you need a free Samsung account for many functions. You can deactivate some or all of the Galaxy AI features in your phone’s settings. It is also possible to only activate functions in which the data is processed exclusively on the device. It remains to be seen whether the new button can also be hidden this way.
In addition to the Galaxy AI, you will soon see another new symbol on Samsung phones. The blue circle with two arrows is a well-known function of the devices that appears in a new look.
