Sales down, but buyers upmarket

The figures from the Federation of Micro-Mobility Professionals (FPMM) have fallen, and some conclusions are in order. Buyers of electric scooters have moved upmarket in 2022: fewer machines have been sold, of course, but the models purchased are of better quality, and therefore more expensive.

After five years of strong growth, sales plunged in 2022, to 759,000 units sold (-16% over one year). But the French market has further increased in value to reach 345 million euros (+14.5%), with an average price rising sharply (+33.2%) to 455 euros.

Omnipresent so far, entry-level scooters (sold for less than 300 euros) have fallen sharply in favor of higher ranges, between 300 and 800 euros. If general inflation has played a role, this price increase is mainly linked to a “market which tends to become mature”, analyzes Jean Ambert. Half of users ride every day

Nearly 63% of users mainly choose these machines to save time and 24% for their ecological side, according to an OpinionWay survey conducted between the beginning of 2021 and October 2022 among 861 owners of electric scooters or gyroroues (a large motorized wheel with two chocks for the feet).

Half of the users drive every day or almost and almost half take their vehicle in another means of transport, whether it is a car, a bus or the train. 34% of them cover between 5 and 10 km, and 25% 10 km or more. 29% of users have given up on a public transport subscription, and 21% on the purchase of a car or motorized two-wheeler.

More than two million French people now use a motorized personal transport device (EDPM), mainly electric scooters but also unicycles, according to this study.
