RX 6950 XT & Co: Launch and first tests of the new AMD graphics cards

AMD starts shipping its new RDNA 2 graphics cards Radeon RX 6950 XT, RX 6750 XT and RX 6650 XT. The three refresh models fill the gap up to the new RDNA 3 architecture and offer a manageable performance advantage. Prices start from 449 euros.

In the competition against Nvidia, the focus is on the new flagship with the RDNA 2 refresh – the AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT. Like the other two new editions, players benefit from slightly increased clock rates and a higher memory bandwidth and speed. The FP32 performance could thus be increased from 20.6 TFLOPS (RX 6900 XT) to 21.5 TFLOPs (RX 6950 XT). The situation is similar in the case of the RX 6750 XT and RX 6650 XT, although the increases here are only in the range between 0.2 to 0.4 TFLOPs.

Additional performance only in the single-digit percentage range

In the end, however, what will be decisive is not the performance on paper, but in actual games. Among other things, the colleagues from ComputerBase provide the first practical benchmarks. With a classic Full HD resolution (1080p), the Radeon RX 6950 XT in particular can convince and on average even easily overtake the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. However, if ray tracing comes into play, the high-end cards are Nvidia clearly ahead. A similar picture emerges with the equally widespread WQHD and 4K resolutions. In a direct comparison with the predecessor RX 6900 XT, gamers can expect an increase in performance of three to six percent.

The “jumps in performance” look similar with the cheaper AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT and RX 6650 XT graphics cards, which in the non-ray tracing segment, however, can assert themselves against their direct competitors Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 or draw level with them. For this, however, players have to use a rate that is about ten percent higher power consumption and sometimes accept significantly higher prices of 449 euros (RX 6650 XT), 619 euros (RX 6750 XT) and 1239 euros (RX 6950 XT). In the end it is a mini update that heralds the end of the successful RDNA 2 era until the introduction of the RDNA 3 GPUs.
