Switzerland wins Eurovision, Israel booed during its performance and Slimane finishes 4th

The final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 took place this Saturday, May 11 in Malmö, Sweden. Ten years after Conchita Wurst’s victory for Austria, this edition will have marked a new milestone for the LGBTQ community. Swiss artist Nemo became the first non-binary person (i.e. who identifies with neither the masculine nor the feminine gender) to win the competition.

Slimane came in fourth place after Croatia and Ukraine. Israeli singer Eden Golan whistled during her live performance finished in fifth place.

Photos of the Northern Lights taken by amateurs and professionals flourished all weekend on social networks, accompanied by amazed comments.

“Words fail me to describe this fabulous spectacle in the sky this night (…)”, writes French photographer Mathieu Rivrin on Facebook.

The phenomenon is due to an “extreme” solar storm, caused by a series of mass ejections from the solar corona.

A “party” that ends badly

A 30-year-old man died on Sunday morning of cardio-respiratory arrest during an illegal rave party near Saumur, in Maine-et-Loire. He was “under narcotics”, according to a police source, who did not give further details on the nature of the substances or the possible link with the death. The undeclared rave party started Wednesday evening. At the height of the “party”, on Saturday, it brought together around 10,000 people on isolated agricultural land, where no access to drinking water or toilets had been provided.

Russians gain ground in Kharkiv
