Russia reports drone attacks – another fire in a refinery

As of: March 17, 2024 12:15 p.m

Another fire has been reported in a Russian oil refinery – probably after a drone attack. The fire in the Krasnodar Territory is said to have now been extinguished. Ukraine reports airstrikes on Odessa.

Both Russia and Ukraine are again reporting night attacks with drones and missiles. A drone attack triggered a fire at an oil refinery in Russia’s Black Sea region of Krasnodar. The flames have now been extinguished after a large-scale operation by the fire department, and one person died of a heart attack, reported the state news agency Tass.

Several Ukrainian media outlets, citing their own sources, unanimously reported that the Ukrainian secret service SBU, together with army special forces, were responsible for the attack. Such attacks are rarely officially confirmed.

Videos and photos were published at X that are supposed to show the attack on the refinery. The user OSINTtechnical locates the recordings in Slavyansk-na-Kuban, east of the Kerch Strait in the Krasnodar Region.

On Saturday night, three oil facilities in the Russian region of Samara on the Volga, which is more than 1,000 kilometers east of Ukraine, were attacked. With such attacks, Ukraine wants to disrupt Russian fuel production so that the military receives fewer supplies.

Drones in numerous Russian regions

The Russian Defense Ministry reported the downing of 35 drones. In addition to the Krasnodar region, unmanned aerial vehicles were also intercepted over the Moscow area and the Belgorod, Yaroslavl, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol and Rostov regions. The anti-aircraft defense also fired several rockets over Belgorod, which is near the border. A 16-year-old girl was killed in a residential building in the area by a rocket.

In addition, according to Russian information, a Ukrainian drone hit a polling station in the Russian-occupied part of the Ukrainian Zaporizhzhia region. The municipal cultural center in the small town of Kamyanka-Dniprovska caught fire in the attack, wrote Russian politician Vladimir Rogov, chairman of the “We are with Russia” movement, on his Telegram channel.

Conflict parties as a source

In the current situation, information on the course of the war, shelling and casualties provided by official bodies of the Russian and Ukrainian parties to the conflict cannot be directly verified by an independent body.

Zelenskyj sees “vulnerabilities” in the Russian system

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his evening video message on Saturday: “In these weeks, many have already seen that the Russian system of warfare has weak points and that we can reach these weak points with our weapons.” He was obviously referring primarily to the attacks on refineries.

In its defense against the Russian invasion, Ukraine repeatedly shells Russian territory – both in the border region and in the hinterland. However, the number of victims and damage are disproportionate to the serious consequences of the war in Ukraine. Ukraine has apparently increased its attacks during the election in Russia.

Another attack on Odessa

Ukraine also reported new Russian attacks. According to its own information, the anti-aircraft defense was able to intercept 14 of the 16 drones, but probably none of the seven missiles.

According to Ukrainian information, several buildings in the port city of Odessa were damaged by a Russian air strike. “The fires were extinguished immediately,” the army said. It was initially unclear whether the fires were caused by falling debris or by the impact of a drone. According to official information, two farms were also damaged in the Odessa region. On Friday, Russia attacked residential buildings in Odessa with rockets, killing at least 21 people.

In Chernihiv, a residential building was also damaged. In the Donetsk region, another Russian rocket attack on Myrnohrod injured an 86-year-old woman.
