More than a dozen miners were buried in one of Russia’s largest gold mines. The company has now ended the search for the missing people due to the risk to the life of the rescue workers.

After two weeks of attempted rescue of 13 miners in In Russia, helpers have stopped searching for those buried in one of the country’s largest gold mines.

After the accident in the Pioneer gold mine in the Far Eastern Amur region, about 5,300 kilometers east of Moscow, there was no longer any hope for the men, according to the company. The families of the dead miners should receive compensation amounting to an annual salary, the Interfax agency reported, according to the company. The accident occurred on March 18th.

Specialists recently drilled a 70-meter-long tunnel to reach the buried victims at a depth of around 120 meters. The search has now been ended because of the danger to the rescue workers. The section of the pit where the miners could be was filled with rock and water, it was said. “The lives of rescue workers and miners involved in the work are at mortal risk,” the company said.

According to official information, there was no contact with the missing people. At times more than 200 rescue workers were on duty, including from other regions of Russia. Pioneer is one of the largest gold mines in Russia and the world. According to the operating company Petropavlovsk, 119,000 ounces (3,370 tons) of gold were mined there in 2020.
